Spend a little time wandering the Utah desert and you'll quickly become acquainted with sagebrush. It grows in abundance across the landscape, filling the wide open spaces with silvery-green foliage and that unmistakable earthy fragrance, especially after a little rain.
For the Southern Paiute people, sagebrush has long been much more than a familiar part of the landscape. Its leaves have been used in traditional medicine and ceremony, its bark for clothing and shelter, and its branches for warmth. I love knowing that a plant so abundant in this landscape has also been such a meaningful part of the lives and traditions of the people who have called this land home for generations.
There's a beautiful traditional Paiute story about sagebrush as a gift to humanity, shared by Northern Paiute storyteller Judy Trejo through Wisdom of the Elders. You can listen to her share the story and traditional songs here.
Inspired by this generous desert plant, the Sagebrush earrings bring together muted greens, warm ivory, and little touches of gold in a petite weaving. A small tribute to the beauty, abundance, and medicine of the high desert.
Part of the Utah Desert collection, lovingly created in Torrey, Utah, on the ancestral homelands of the Southern Paiute people.
Hand-woven with high-quality Miyuki glass beads, natural thread, and 18K gold-plated sterling silver (925) kidney-style earwires. Only the good stuff. :)
25% of proceeds from this pair are donated to the Koosharem Band of the Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah and Utah Diné Bikéyah, in the spirit of reciprocity and care for the land and its people.
